A joint advisory warned that Akira ransomware had started encrypting Nutanix AHV virtual machines, exploiting vulnerabilities such as CVE-2024-40766, expanding its methods beyond VMware ESXi/Hyper-V, and accelerating attacks worldwide. FBI called Akira ‘top five’ ransomware variant out of 130 targeting US businesses.
