Six distinct ransomware variants were decrypted, 574 suspects arrested, 6000 malicious links disabled, and $3 million in alleged proceeds were recovered, across 19 nations in the Interpol-coordinated ‘Operation Sentinel’, part of its African Joint Operation against Cybercrime (AFJOC). The operation targeted business email compromise (BEC), digital extortion and ransomware. Participation countries were Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senega, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Private sector partners included Team Cymru, The Shadowserver Foundation, Trend Micro, TRM Labs and Uppsala Security.
