Apolline Rolland

Policy Researcher in Cyber and Emerging Technologies

Apolline is a Policy Researcher in Cyber and Emerging Technologies at Virtual Routes.

Previously, she worked as a cyber and strategic intelligence consultant at Forward Global. As part of this role, Apolline was responsible for leading studies and projects for both private and public sector clients — including the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) — in security and defence, with a strong focus on cyber-related issues. Additionally, Apolline oversaw the participation of EU institutions, NATO, and EU Member States at the InCyber Forum (FIC), managing stakeholder relations and outreach, coordinating speakers and delegations, leading the FIC Advisory Board, and curating the EU Pavilion. She led the European expansion of the InCyber Agora, the FIC’s discussion platform, writing publications and organising high-level debates in Brussels.

Apolline has been actively involved in technology policy initiatives, including participating in the Aspiration Tech Policy Leadership Initiative and being a member of the AI Policy Research Group at the Centre for AI and Digital Policy. Additionally, Apolline initiated and led a collaboration between the student-led Security Distillery and the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) conference, creating an online magazine that made data protection and privacy more accessible and provided students with a platform to apply their knowledge, develop skills, and engage creatively.

Apolline interned at the Centre for Security Studies at ETH Zurich, working on EU information-sharing databases, and at Europol, where she focused on data protection and law enforcement, managing the Europol Data Protection Experts Network (EDEN) and its annual conference. She also gained experience at the Clingendael Institute and served as a communications consultant for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

She holds a master’s degree in Intelligence, Security and Strategic Studies, a joint degree between the universities of Glasgow, Trento and Prague, and a bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Leiden University.
