Between June and August 2025, an INTERPOL-coordinated cybercrime push (supported by UK authorities) led to one of the largest multi-country operations ever carried out on the African continent. Across 18 participating nations, police took more than 1,200 individuals into custody and disrupted over 11,000 malicious online assets tied to a wide range of criminal schemes.
The initiative, known as Operation Serengeti 2.0, focused on financially motivated cybercrime, including business email compromise, online fraud networks, and ransomware-linked activity. Investigators reported recovering approximately $97.4 million in illegal proceeds during the action.
As part of the crackdown, authorities also shut down cryptocurrency-mining facilities allegedly used to launder criminal profits, alongside numerous phishing and scam operations. Overall, the effort significantly undermined cybercrime groups operating in the region by eliminating infrastructure and apprehending individuals believed to support or carry out these activities.
