Introducing VIRO Learning

VIRO Learning Launch

Over the past year, we have been working on a new initiative at Virtual Routes.

Today, we are launching VIRO Learning – a platform offering applied education on cybersecurity and emerging technologies.

The idea for VIRO Learning came from a simple observation. There is no shortage of material on cybersecurity and emerging technologies. But much of it falls into two categories. It is either highly technical, or it is abstract and removed from how these issues play out in practice.

In our own work—across research, events, and discussions with policymakers and practitioners—we repeatedly encountered the same gap. There is a need for content that explains how these issues actually work: how ransomware ecosystems function, how cyber operations are used in conflict, how emerging technologies shape strategic choices, and how governments respond.

VIRO Learning is an attempt to address that gap.

The platform brings together contributions from leading experts in their respective fields, spanning academia, government, and the private sector. It combines analytical perspectives with practitioner experience, with a focus on how these issues are understood and addressed in practice.

Content covers a range of topics, including ransomware and cybercrime, cyber operations, AI and cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, and technology policy. The aim is not to provide technical training, nor to offer abstract theory, but to present structured insights into how these issues unfold in real-world settings.

The content is designed to be accessible to a mixed audience. Graduate students, policymakers, and practitioners often approach these topics from different starting points, but face many of the same underlying questions. VIRO Learning is intended to provide a shared foundation, while still offering sufficient depth for those working directly on these issues.

VIRO Learning also reflects a broader objective of Virtual Routes: to make high-quality expertise more accessible. Much of the knowledge in this space remains fragmented across academic publications, policy discussions, and practitioner communities. The platform brings these perspectives together in a more structured format.

We see this as a first step. Intended to be a collaborative space for learning and exchange, the platform will continue to expand over time, both in terms of content and the range of contributors. If you have ideas for topics we should explore or people we should feature, please get in touch.
