French gendarmes from the Brittany region investigated a Belarusian national, Yauhen Horbach, who ran global ransom-attacks on 2,341 victims in 65 countries. He was arrested in Georgia in August 2022, extradited to France in May 2023, and in April 2025 sentenced to five years in prison and €100,000 fine. Weakened identifiers (IP address, PayPal traces, Instagram metadata) helped crack the case.
