An internationally-coordinated action named ‘Operation Lightning’ took down the proxy service ‘SocksEscort’ which used the AVrecon malware to infect routers and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Europol facilitated coordination between partners to seize domains and servers while the USA froze $3.5m in cryptocurrency. The ‘SocksEscort’ proxy service enabled crimes such as ransomware and DDoS attacks by routing traffic through infected devices to conceal their origin.
